Our client, the Furniture Division of the Rank Group of Companies, is one of Atlantic Canada’s largest furniture retailers with 3 unique stores to choose from, (Gallery1 Furniture, Ashley Home Store and Worldwide Furniture), in 5 locations. We are pleased to be partnered with them in search of a Controller to take on a key role on their accounting and finance team.


The Controller would be responsible for the recording and reporting of financial transactions, financial controls as well as business analysis required for the day to day running of five retail stores and a distribution warehouse. The role works closely with the Finance management team to support the furniture operation through financial analysis and business recommendations.


Responsibilities will include:

 

  • Review transactions posted through the point of sale and general ledger and ensure all account reconciliations are completed on a monthly basis.
  • Prepare the quarterly and annual working paper files and financial statements.
  • Compile information for key performance indicators to be distributed to the owners to ensure their understanding of the current business results.
  • Manage an Accounts Payable employee – provide support in ensuring they are able to complete their day-to-day responsibilities, engage in regular coaching and performance management, and complete a formal performance review yearly.
  • Provide support to the ownership and management team in terms of compiling, interpreting and understanding financial results. Produce quarterly reports for store managers.
  • Oversee inventory control processes including cycle counts and reconciliations.
  • Regularly review, analyze, and assess systems (including Storis), controls, and processes. Proactively take actions as needed to make improvements.
  • Conduct ad hoc reporting as requested to assist with business decision-making.
  • Proactively take actions as needed to improve business results.
  • Other ad hoc accounting work as needed.


The ideal candidate will possess:

 

  • Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., Bachelor of Commerce, Accounting, etc.).
  • 5+ years’ experience of accounting experience (retail accounting experience is an asset).
  • CPA designation is an asset, but not required.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills; ability to build rapport with others.
  • Solid understanding of full cycle accounting.
  • Proven problem-solving abilities and experience.
  • Genuine interest in business operations and contributing to the success of the team.
