Meridia Recruitment is pleased to partner with the City of Calgary in the recruitment of a newly created Deputy Director, Asset Management to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of the City’s centralized asset management function. 
This strategic leadership role will provide oversight of the City’s centralized asset management function, supporting the Director, Capital Planning & Business Services in ensuring Calgary’s infrastructure portfolio is managed safely, efficiently, and sustainably.

As Deputy Director, Asset Management, you will oversee a team responsible for delivering the corporate asset management strategy, driving accountability across multiple service lines, supporting managers and providing guidance to technical teams and individual contributors. You will champion system-level change, enhance the maturity of asset management practices, and ensure that risk, performance, and accountability measures are implemented across multiple service lines. You will also play a key role in driving organizational outcomes, supporting staff, and enabling senior leaders to make informed, strategic decisions.

Key Responsibilities 
  • Leadership & Team Development: Lead, mentor, and develop managers, team leads, and technical staff; oversee recruitment, onboarding, and training; set performance expectations and foster a healthy, safe, inclusive, and innovative workplace.
  • Corporate Asset Management: Provide strategic oversight and guidance for the City’s asset management policies, strategies, and practices; ensure asset management plans are developed for each asset class and risk/gap analyses are conducted.
  • Performance, Risk & Accountability: Drive operational excellence and accountability across the centralized asset management function; ensure teams deliver on investigations, escalations, and preventative maintenance to support City operations.
  • Capital & Operational Planning: Influence City-wide capital and operating investment strategies, including preparation and adjustment of corporate budgets and reserves.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work across departments, third-party reviews, and potentially utilities to align asset management practices and enhance organizational performance.
  • Emergency Response & Compliance: Lead asset-related activities during emergency responses within an Incident Command Structure; ensure legislative compliance for the professional engineering asset management practice.

Qualifications/Skills 
  • 15+ years of senior-level professional engineering experience managing large-scale asset portfolios
  • A university degree in Engineering, and P. Eng. designation and a current licensure with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) OR practicing status by the first day of work.
  • Extensive experience in asset management, risk management, and project management ideally in large-scale utility, municipal, or corporate environments.
  • Asset Management Professional (AMP) designation, Risk Management Professional (RMP) designation, or CNAM Certification is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change and achieve results, communicate strategy and translate technical and operational issues to diverse audiences.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, negotiation, and relationship management skills, with political acumen.
  • Excellent communication, relationship management, and people leadership skills, with the ability to manage change and collaborate effectively across City departments and with internal and external partners.
  • Highly developed strategic thinking, analytical, planning, and problem-solving skills, along with the capacity to make sound decisions in a complex, high-profile environment.
  • Strong systems thinking with the ability to analyze situations, evaluate options, foresee potential outcomes, and make informed decisions.
  • Aligning with City corporate values, demonstrated success in building, developing, and leading strong teams, leading and managing change, and establishing and maintaining strong and positive working relationships.

What is Offered to Staff
  • Rate of Pay: $218,688 - $273,360
  • Hours of Work: This is a non-union position that works Monday-Friday 35 hours per week.
