Turner Drake is the oldest full service real estate consultancy in Atlantic Canada. They were founded in 1976 to provide real estate services to the business community. In 1998 they expanded their service area to include Ontario, to meet the demands of clients owning property there as well. From their head office in Halifax, Nova Scotia they now undertake assignments from coast to coast, and all points in between. Their service offering has expanded to include seven complimentary divisions: Valuation, Property Tax, Counselling, Brokerage, Lasercad® Space Measurement, Economic Intelligence and Planning. They currently provide consulting advice on over $10 billion worth of property annually.

On behalf of our client, we are currently recruiting for a Real Estate Counsellor to join their team of dedicated professionals in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The Opportunity

Consulting Staff are firmly focused on assisting clients meet their strategic goals, not just their immediate needs. Whether you're already working in commercial real estate or simply have a strong interest in the field, Real Estate Counselling offers a wide range of opportunities. Assignments can vary from standard valuation and appraisal work to more complex and unconventional projects such as infrastructure acquisition, First Nations land claims, expropriation, mediation and arbitration, property assessment appeals, etc. If you’re looking for a professional environment that supports your growth, invests in your career, and rewards your success, this could be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. The Real Estate Counsellor will be responsible for: 
 
  • Preparing reports for estate planning, matrimonial litigation, insurance and business losses, financing, balance sheet reporting, purchase and sale, etc.
  • Appearing as an expert witness before courts and various regulatory boards and commissions.
  • Managing large real estate consulting projects.
  • Preparation of valuation reports in accordance with established professional standards.  
  • Litigation work with appearances at all court levels as well as non-litigation valuation reports on property.
  • Reviewing property assessments, filing appeals, and negotiating reductions on behalf of property owners.
  • Training and supervising junior and intermediate-level Consultants.
Skills & Qualifications

Professional Accreditation:
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) with relevant experience.
  • Chartered Surveyor (F/MRICS), or
  • Other relevant real estate accreditations.
Experience & Expertise:
  • Experience in (and a comfort level with) finance as well as the ability to learn how to apply it in a real estate setting.
  • Understanding of property valuation, property tax, and/or strategic real estate counselling would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-level, strategic advice for long term client relationships—beyond “cookie-cutter” assignments or focusing only on immediate needs.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
  • A genuine interest in people, strong listening skills, and the ability to build and maintain long-term client relationships.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; French is an asset.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and networking abilities.
  • Comfortable interacting with professionals across a broad spectrum—from CEOs to tradespeople, and enjoy building relationships through problem solving.
