Role Description
The Halifax office of Smith + Andersen is currently seeking an experienced Electrical BIM Technician to work on design projects or on Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) projects. You are qualified in contributing to the design of building services, such as Lighting, Power, AV & Communications, and Fire Alarm & Security, and possess excellent Revit modelling skills. You are a team player who is highly motivated with great communication skills. You will work under the direct supervision of a project engineer or designer and will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of projects including healthcare, commercial, residential, education, and many others.
 
In this unique role, you will also have the opportunity to provide Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) services, where you will prepare, maintain, and support the overall effort for the development of the electrical construction design models.

On Electrical BIM projects, you will:
  • Model and/or design for a single discipline. Prepares drawing packages, including plans, layouts, schematics, and detailed scale drawings using drawings and files and the S+A Prototype standard drawing setup at the onset of a project.
  • Produce and/or modify a BIM (Building Information Model) from sketches, mark-ups and/or designs as required by the project team to suit design requirements, consultant changes, scope changes and/or general updates.
  • Review models against markups to ensure accuracy of work in the three-dimensional model and resultant two-dimensional drawings.
  • Collaborate/communicate with other disciplines’ design changes and model challenges.
  • Populate and maintain the parametric database within a model as needed to meet design requirements.
  • Identify and discuss interferences or space issues with the project team for resolution and change implementation. This may include three-dimensional analysis using Revit or other software such as Navisworks.
  • Prepare submissions for issuance, plotting and archives.
  • Control and maintain models in an organized manner in the appropriate project directory system, as per company standards.
  • Adhere to office BIM standards and prototype standards, including the project BIM Execution Plan, Level of Development matrix
  • Layout pipes, ductwork, lighting, cable tray, or conduits, and identify clashes. When required, produce schematic drawings and identify sizing requirements.
  • Reviews layouts of lighting services for interferences with major building elements such as structure, ceilings, walls, etc.
  • Generates Navisworks models.
  • Any other BIM tasks required to assist in the completion of working drawings.
 
On Electrical VDC Coordination projects, you will:
  • Create comprehensive BIM models for electrical systems and ensure they adhere to the project's BIM Execution Plan (BEP). 
  • Prepare and maintain the BIM scope of work, creating electrical model content for VDC coordination meetings in line with electrical codes and company standards.
  • Generate installation drawings for various electrical building systems, including power distribution, fire alarm, lighting, communications and security system, etc.
  • Produce detailed drawings, layouts, and working plans based on instructions given.
  • Collaborate with the project team to develop drawings efficiently and accurately while adhering to time and schedule constraints.
  • Create detailed drawings showing the necessary assemblies and dimensions of various electrical equipment, including fastening methods and slab coordinates.
  • Model and coordinate electrical infrastructure such as cable trays, sleeving, and electrical equipment, resolving any clashes with other trades. 
  • Participate in coordination meetings with all stakeholders.
  • Prepare clash detection reports, and analyze MEP and structural drawings for different types of occupancy and spaces.  
  • Follow the project schedule to submit deliverables and implement necessary changes and revisions. 
  • Communicate and respond to VDC requests from General Contractor and other trades.

Your Qualifications
  • College diploma from an architectural or electrical building services program; or a related field with relevant work experience.
  • One to five years of direct industry experience in electrical building services.
  • Knowledge of electrical distribution, fire alarm, lighting, security, communications, and/or audio-visual systems are preferred assets.
  • Knowledge and experience working with Autodesk Revit 2017 or newer is required, with exposure to electrical layouts and systems.
  • Experience with shared parameters, scheduling, family editing, etc. is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk AutoCAD, AutoCAD MEP, Navisworks Manage, and Dynamo software.
  • Knowledge of all Microsoft Office suites, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
  • Highly innovative and motivated with an attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to work independently, as well as contribute to the team.
