Located in the northeastern part of Nova Scotia, the Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) encompasses Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness and Richmond Counties and serves approximately 6,000 students, 1000 employees and 20 schools. Meridia Recruitment Solutions is excited to partner with SRCE seeking a Director of Finance to join their senior leadership team. 


Reporting to the Regional Executive Director of Education, the Director of Finance is responsible for the professional and effective leadership of all financial services. The successful candidate will provide insights and recommendations to support decision-making in the best interests of students and whose commitment is excellence in lifelong learning and school success for all students.


Responsibilities will include:
 
  • Establish effective communication between the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the SRCE to support financial reporting, budgeting, planning and analysis.
  • Oversee the management of the Financial Services Department.
  • Lead the development and implementation of financial systems and accounting processes including the implementation of software systems that allow efficient and effective management of financial resources.
  • Ensure the development of effective and timely financial reports to provide senior staff and the supervisors with the ability to efficiently and effectively manage financial resources of the Regional Centre for Education.
  • Co-ordinate and supervise the development of policies, procedures, and business practices with respect to accounting and payroll services, procurement, budgeting and other areas within the jurisdiction of Financial Services and recommendations to the senior administrative leadership team with respect to the implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Establish, communicate and monitor compliance with accepted financial reporting standards (PSAB) and internal controls.
  • Support the Audit Committee of the Regional Centre for Education.
  • Assessment of and mitigation against insurance risk.
  • Establish technology expectations and expertise related to Financial Services.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Regional Executive Director of Education.

The ideal candidate will possess:
 
  • CPA designation.
  • Post-secondary education in accounting or finance.
  • 5+ years of management experience coupled with 5+ years experience leading budget and financial management in a large organization. 
  • Strong knowledge of accounting, analytics and controls.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience using information technology and financial systems.
  • Strong analytical ability and the capacity to develop policies, processes, and practices which result in the implementation of efficient and effective financial services.
  • Successful experience in leading, supervising and motivating staff, including performance evaluation and professional growth planning.
  • Strong leadership, team building, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities. Able to multi-task and handle competing priorities.
