Meridia Recruitment is excited to partner with Horizon Maritime in their search for an Assistant Controller to join their finance team in St. John’s. This position offers a unique opportunity for an experienced accounting professional to contribute to Horizon’s financial operations and growth. Reporting directly to the Corporate Controller, the Assistant Controller will play a key role in the preparation of financial records, monthly reporting, strategic analysis, and ensuring the continued financial health of Horizon Maritime and its subsidiaries.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Corporate Controller with the preparation of monthly financial reports, statutory reporting, and quarterly compliance reporting.
  • Ensure the accuracy of financial records, including preparing and posting monthly accruals, payroll, prepaids, and other journal entries.
  • Oversee and prepare weekly and monthly bank reconciliations.
  • Reconcile and post monthly credit card statements, ensuring accurate reporting.
  • Maintain HST/PST workbook for review and filing.
  • Reconcile various clearing accounts and address discrepancies.
  • Assist in the preparation of variance analysis and explanations for financial results, including comparing to budget.
  • Perform strategic business analyses to enhance efficiency and effectiveness across departments.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports in support of business process initiatives.
  • Assist with internal controls implementation and ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Collaborate with junior staff, providing guidance and support.
  • Assist with audit preparation and coordinate with external auditors.
  • Other accounting responsibilities and special projects as required.

What We're Looking For:
  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance; Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation or in progress is preferred.
  • Experience in accounting, financial reporting, and month-end procedures.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze complex financial data.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel; ability to adapt to new software.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple deadlines, and deliver high-quality work.
  • Critical thinking and logical analysis skills to identify key issues and provide solutions.
  • Experience with audits and internal controls would be an asset.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
