As HHB continues to advance its ongoing improvement and maintenance initiatives, the organization has partnered with Meridia to find a skilled Bridge Engineer/Senior Bridge Engineer to join their team based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Role Description
Collaborating with the engineering team and contributing to key management initiatives, the Bridge Engineer/Senior Bridge Engineer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the structural integrity and safety of the Macdonald and MacKay bridges, as well as their approaches and related facilities. This role involves conducting inspections to identify maintenance needs, planning and executing critical projects, and ensuring all work is completed within scope, on time, and on budget. Responsibilities include preparing tender documents, selecting and onboarding consultants and contractors, and supervising project execution to ensure quality and safety standards are met. Additionally, the Bridge Engineer provides guidance and mentorship to staff, supports other HHB departments, and fosters teamwork to uphold HHB’s commitment to operational excellence.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Contribute to decisions on engineering projects and initiatives related to bridge structures, ancillary structures, and other HHB infrastructure.
  • Develop detailed work plans that outline and sequence activities for successful project completion.
  • Identify and allocate required resources (time, budget, equipment, and personnel) for key projects.
  • Create and manage project schedules, revising timelines as needed to meet objectives.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Management team to support HHB’s strategic goals.
  • Play a key role in achieving HHB’s maintenance objectives and addressing future infrastructure needs for safe traffic flow and development.
  • Participate in annual bridge inspections, review inspection reports, and evaluate consultant recommendations.
  • Assist in developing and implementing strategic preventative maintenance and rehabilitation programs.
  • Oversee project execution, ensuring alignment with plans and maintaining accurate documentation of project activities.
  • Lead project teams, monitor progress, and adjust plans as necessary to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Prepare and manage RFP and tender documents, oversee procurement processes, and recommend awards and contracts for assigned projects.
  • Provide recommendations and coordinate communications with agencies, consultants, the public, and media.
  • Offer guidance, coaching, and mentorship to department team members and support other HHB departments.

Your Qualifications
As an experienced, professional civil or structural engineer, you bring proficiency in engineering investigations, analysis, and design. Expertise in the inspection, evaluation, and maintenance of complex structures and bridges is a strong asset. You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated history of being able to coordinate projects and facilitate information to numerous stakeholders. In addition, you are a personable team player and bring a positive attitude to the workplace.

Your qualifications include:
  • Years of engineering work experience; experience in inspection, evaluation and maintenance of complex structures and/or bridges is an asset.
  • Bachelor or Master of Science/Engineering in Civil or Structural Engineering; candidates with a Structural Technologist background and bridge experience may also be considered.
  • On path to registration or currently registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in the province of Nova Scotia.
  • Engineering investigations, analysis, and design knowledge
  • Contract Administration and Procurement knowledge
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills
  • Specialist knowledge in long span bridge structures, particularly suspension bridges is an asset.
  • Knowledge/experience in transportation infrastructure is an asset.
  • Project Management Professional (or equivalent) designation is an asset.
  • Project Management experience is considered and asset
