Our client, a leading provider of financial services in North America, is looking to add an Associate General Counsel to their Canadian legal team. For 40 years, they have been committed to providing financial solutions to support the evolving needs of consumers and business owners. With 400+ retail branches across Canada and the US, they empower their customers through quick access to cash and other financial services.

Their highly skilled workforce puts customers first in everything they do. They serve 2 million people annually with financial products such as loans, cheque cashing, money transfer and prepaid cards.

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on lawyer with strong business acumen, capable of working independently and collaboratively with multi-stakeholder teams and external partners. The successful candidate will provide legal advice on a broad range of corporate and commercial matters to help mitigate legal and regulatory risk and support the company’s strategic initiatives. The Associate General Counsel is expected to demonstrate sharp analytical skills, excellent legal and business judgment and directly collaborate with stakeholders to devise creative solutions.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert legal advice and guidance to various business units within the company on a range of issues and matters, including new product launches and initiatives, marketing, consumer matters and escalations, and regulatory compliance.
  • Manage the company’s litigation function, with the assistance of an in-house litigation paralegal and external counsel as needed.
  • Effectively manage and oversee the work of outside counsel to ensure cost-effectiveness and efficiency.

Skills and Qualifications
  • A law degree from a Canadian law school
  • Membership in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • At least 8 years of combined, relevant experience at law firms or in-house legal departments, with deep and practical knowledge and expertise in financial services
  • Employment law and/or litigation experience are significant assets
  • Familiarity with technology product launches and legal aspects of product development, translating legal advice into actionable guidance for teams
  • Experience and ability to assess legal risks, evaluate and solve problems, prioritize multiple high-profile projects, and maintain a diligent, organized, and professional demeanor under pressure
  • A proactive, flexible, positive and team-oriented attitude and strong integrity, ethics, and judgment
  • Ability to effectively balance legal risk mitigation against key business objectives and risks
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
