Now, on behalf of Queen’s University, we are searching for a Safety Technician (Fire Systems). Reporting to the Director, Environmental Health & Safety, the Safety Technician (Fire Systems) will be responsible for conducting routine inspections and certifications of fire systems on campus in compliance with the Ontario Fire Code and CSA Standards, ensuring all fire safety equipment meets regulatory requirements. This includes identifying and reporting deficiencies, coordinating with external contractors and campus facilities, and maintaining detailed inspection documentation. The position also requires collaboration with building occupants to minimize disruptions during testing and the management of fire extinguishers and decommissioning processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly and annual inspections and certifications of fire systems as per Ontario Fire Code and CSA Standards.
  • Identify deficiencies requiring maintenance and report them to Facilities for follow-up.
  • Complete and submit inspection reports and required documentation accurately and on time.
  • Coordinate with building occupants to schedule testing to avoid disruptions, rescheduling if needed.
  • Facilitate required inspections and maintenance by an external fire alarm monitoring agency.
  • Oversee semi-annual inspections of commercial kitchen fire suppression systems with external contractors and Residence Facilities.
  • Conduct annual inspections of campus fire extinguishers.
  • Support the Fire Safety Coordinator in maintaining an up-to-date inventory of extinguishers.
  • Arrange for extinguisher recharging and hydrostatic testing with external contractors.

Ideal Candidate Skills & Experience

  • Certified Fire Alarm Technician registered in good standing with the Canadian Fire alarm Association.
  • A two-year college diploma or equivalent in fire and life safety systems, electronics or instrumentation is required.
  • A minimum 3 years’ experience performing fire alarm inspections, certification, and related work.
  • Good working knowledge of computers for word processing, e-mail, and database management.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills.
  • The incumbent must complete appropriate WHMIS, First Aid/CPR and Transportation of Dangerous Goods training.
  • A valid driver’s license is required, and the incumbent must be insurable under the University Insurance Policy by demonstrating a clean driving record.
  • The incumbent must be physically capable of performing the job duties.
