Our client a dynamic, downtown Ottawa law firm is currently seeking an experienced Real Estate Development Lawyer to join their firm. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both commercial and residential real estate transactions, with a focus on development projects. Your Responsibilities:

• Work closely with real estate developers (both commercial and residential) on raw land and infill development projects.
• Manage and execute transactions related to sales, purchases, and financing.
• Provide legal advice and recommendations on corporate, partnership, and joint venture structures.
• Advise on municipal law and policy, ensuring compliance and providing guidance on real estate development matters.
• Participate in all aspects of real estate transactions, including land acquisition, development, financing, leasing, structuring, and sales.
• Manage land purchases and sales, financing, and joint venture structures, with experience in cost-sharing arrangements, volume sales of residential lots, raw land development, and infill redevelopment.
• Land use planning, expropriation, municipal property tax assessment and municipal finance including site-specific and broad development policy issues, and related development matters including disputes.

 

Your Requirements:
• 5+ Years’ Post-Call Experience as a lawyer in Ontario working with a law firm dealing in real estate and municipal and planning law
• Experience taking raw land through the development approval process to obtain subdivision, site plan or development approval, including strata consents
• Experience drafting, negotiation and review of development agreements including partnership and limited partnership agreements, joint venture agreements, cost sharing agreements, subdivision agreements and site plan agreements, etc.
• Experience with related municipal law including land use planning and assisting with representation of landowners before planning committees or boards
• Good understanding of corporate law
• Very strong technical skills using: Microsoft Office, Document Management software, Soluno (or similar time keeping application), docketing, billing time
• Ability to work closely, and in collaboration with clients, other lawyers, municipalities, financial institutions, clerks, and staff
• Able to work and reason independently on client files
• Ability to handle all aspects of transaction files with minimal guidance, but with the full support of the firm and staff
• Possess excellent organizational skills and be able to work in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail
• Ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines
• Member in Good Standing of the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) (Required)
• Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) (Required)
