The Dos and Don’ts of Using AI to Support Your Job Search and Interview Strategy

From resume writing to interview prep, AI tools have become widely accessible and increasingly tempting for job seekers to rely on. With just a few clicks, you can generate a tailored cover letter, receive instant feedback on your LinkedIn profile, or rehearse common interview questions with a chatbot.

While AI can be a powerful ally in your job search, it also comes with limitations and risks. When used without careful intention and responsibility, it can dilute your voice, introduce inaccuracies, or raise red flags with hiring teams.

As recruiters and talent advisors, we’re seeing how candidates are using these tools in real time, and where things can go wrong. Here are the dos and don’ts of using AI to support your search while keeping your authenticity and credibility intact.

DO: Use AI to Expand Your Job Search Strategy

AI can be a valuable research tool before you apply. Use it to:

  • Explore new career paths

  • Research companies that align with your values

  • Summarize recent industry trends related to your target roles

These insights help you make informed decisions and speak with confidence about why an opportunity resonates with you.

DO: Let AI Support (Not Define) Your Story

AI can save time by summarizing job postings or drafting an outline for your resume. But it doesn’t know you, your motivations, experiences, or voice.

Use AI for structure and inspiration, then make it your own.

“AI can give you a start, but it shouldn’t be your final draft. The strongest applications still come from a place of authenticity. Use AI to stimulate your thinking, not replace it.”

- Jamie Grant - Partner, Meridia

DON’T: Skip the Accuracy and Authenticity Check

AI can make incorrect assumptions, blend details, or insert false information. Always review and fact-check any document created with AI support, as well as any research you conduct about the organization, the industry or the role.

Even tone matters. If your language doesn’t sound like you, it can undermine your credibility when you move from written application to live conversation.

“A tool can’t tell your story – only you can. Use AI to help you prepare, not to replace your personality.”

- Austin McLennan, BA, CPHR - Sr. Consultant, Meridia

DO: Use AI to Practice, Not Perform

AI tools can help with mock interviews or generating sample questions to build your confidence and providing feedback on your responses. But the goal is preparation, not performance.

Do use AI as a rehearsal tool. Don’t let it make you sound rehearsed.

Ask yourself: Does this sound like me? Am I sharing real examples from my own experience?

“Hiring managers are looking for potential and promise, not perfection. If your answers sound scripted, you miss the chance to show them who you really are.”

- Sidra Martin - Sr. Consultant, Meridia

DON’T: Assume AI Use Is Always Welcome

AI can help you craft a strong application and prepare for interviews but not every employer welcomes its use. In some cases, materials should be entirely your own, unassisted. If AI is used to exaggerate or misrepresent your skills, it can damage trust and credibility.

Before you apply, check for any guidance on AI use and act with honesty and integrity. And avoid using AI during interviews, even virtual ones, where the genuineness of your response matters most.
