Meridia Recruitment Solutions has partnered with the Town of Antigonish to recruit a Water/Wastewater Operator for their Treatment Facilities in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. 

The Town of Antigonish is a vibrant and growing community committed to delivering high-quality municipal services to residents and businesses. Its Treatment Facilities include a Class 3 Water Treatment Plant and a Class 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant, providing safe drinking water and wastewater treatment services to approximately 12,000 residents within the Town and surrounding area.  

As part of a dedicated Public Works team, you will play a critical role in protecting public health, safeguarding the environment, and ensuring the continued delivery of essential services to the community. 

This is a full-time, unionized position with regular day shifts from 8:00am to 4:30pm. Operators participate in a rotating on-call schedule, providing after-hours support approx. one week out of every three. 

Role Description 
Reporting to the Manager of Treatment Facilities, the Water/Wastewater Operator will support the day to-day operation of the Town's water and wastewater treatment facilities, ensuring systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory requirements. 

Your responsibilities will include: 
  • Operating treatment plant equipment and SCADA control systems. 
  • Monitoring facility performance and responding to operational alarms as part of an on-call rotation. 
  • Performing preventative maintenance, inspections, and equipment adjustments to ensure reliable operation. 
  • Collecting samples and conducting routine testing to support process control and regulatory compliance. 
  • Maintaining operational records and documenting plant activities and irregularities. 
  • Assisting with chemical handling and treatment processes. 
  • Monitoring remote infrastructure, including water towers and related systems. 
  • Supporting the ongoing safe operation of facilities while adhering to environmental, health, and safety standards. 

Your Qualifications 
As the ideal candidate, you are a safety-focused and dependable professional with strong technical aptitude and a commitment to providing essential public services. You are highly organized, detail oriented, and take pride in maintaining accurate records and delivering quality work. A strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills, you are comfortable working independently, collaborating as part of a team, and adapting to changing operational priorities. 

Key qualifications include: 
  • Operator-in-Training (OIT) certification, water/wastewater certifications, or technical training related to water and/or wastewater treatment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 
  • Experience in water and/or wastewater treatment operations; municipal experience is considered an asset. 
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills, with a high degree of attention to detail. 
  • Proficiency with computer systems, Microsoft Suite, and operational technologies (SCADA). 
  • The ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment. 
  • A valid driver's license is required.  
  • Safety certifications such as Confined Space, Fall Arrest, TDG, First Aid, Rigging, or Chlorine Emergency Response training are considered assets.
