Role Description
Reporting to the Chief Estimator, the Estimator will play a key role in the successful pursuit and execution of structural steel and bridge projects. Working closely with internal teams, suppliers, subcontractors, and project stakeholders, you will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates, evaluating project requirements, identifying risks, and supporting the development of competitive bids. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to complex infrastructure projects while supporting strategic decision-making throughout the estimating process.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing drawings, specifications, addenda, and tender packages to determine project scope and requirements.
- Preparing detailed quantity take-offs, labour calculations, and project cost estimates.
- Developing and submitting proposals, quotations, bids, and supporting documentation.
- Obtaining and evaluating pricing from suppliers, subcontractors, and internal departments.
- Identifying project risks, key cost drivers, and opportunities to improve project competitiveness.
- Coordinating with purchasing, drafting, quality, legal, insurance, and project management teams throughout the estimating process.
- Supporting project managers with cost analysis and estimating services as required.
- Maintaining accurate estimating records, documentation, and historical cost data.
- Participating in estimating meetings and providing updates on active opportunities.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and industry partners.
- Assisting with project planning activities, including scheduling and manpower forecasting.
- Promoting and supporting a strong culture of safety across all aspects of the organization.
Your Qualifications
Your experience as an Estimator includes working with custom steel fabrication projects, where heavy steel plate and beam/column work were utilized. You have developed a keen attention to detail, allowing you to account for every possible characteristic of a project. You also have great time-management and organizational skills, allowing you to manage multiple projects and tight deadlines at once. With a proven ability to communicate and build relationships with various stakeholders involved in the estimating process, you’ve shown you are able to balance the level of detail needed in a proposal with the timeframe you are given.
Your qualifications include:
- 5+ years of estimating experience in fabrication, industrial, or related subcontractor operations.
- Experience with structural steel, bridge, heavy civil, or custom fabrication projects is considered a strong asset.
- A diploma or degree in Engineering, Construction Management or a related discipline; a combination or education and experience may also be considered.
- Strong knowledge of construction drawings, specifications, contracts, and tendering processes.
- Experience preparing quantity take-offs, labour estimates, and project cost analyses.
- A thorough understanding of bid preparation, subcontractor procurement, pricing strategies, and bid closing procedures.
- Strong attention to detail, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
- Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset
