Director, Corporate Tax
Bedford, NS
Reference # HL-SGL-9604

The Shaw Group is one of Atlantic Canada's most established and diversified family-owned companies, with operations spanning real estate development, construction, manufacturing, and property ownership. With decades of growth and a reputation for building communities across the region, Shaw operates a complex, multi-entity corporate structure and is committed to excellence in both business performance and governance.

We are pleased to be partnered with The Shaw Group in the search for a Director, Corporate Tax to join their team. Reporting directly to the CFO, this is Shaw's primary in-house tax role — a senior, hands-on position for a technically strong corporate tax professional who thrives in a complex, multi-entity environment. The Director will serve as the company's internal tax authority, leading compliance, planning, and audit management across Shaw's divisions and affiliated entities, with a particular focus on real estate and corporate structures.

Key Responsibilities include:
  • Serve as The Shaw Group's in-house corporate tax specialist, with deep focus on real estate development, construction, manufacturing, partnerships, and related entities
  • Provide expert tax guidance to senior management and operating divisions on complex tax matters, planning opportunities, and compliance requirements
  • Lead strategic tax planning initiatives across Shaw divisions, related entities, and consolidated structures
  • Advise on tax structuring for acquisitions, dispositions, reorganizations, partnerships, joint ventures, and intercompany transactions
  • Oversee corporate income tax compliance across multiple entities, including preparation, review, and filing of T2 corporate tax returns
  • Manage tax instalments, elections, assessments, reassessments, and all related filings
  • Oversee HST self-assessments, monthly filings, and related CRA reviews and audits in collaboration with divisional accounting teams
  • Serve as the primary company contact for CRA audits, reviews, information requests, and objections
  • Act as the main tax liaison with external auditors on provisions, disclosures, and supporting documentation
  • Develop and maintain tax processes, controls, compliance calendars, and governance protocols across the organization
  • Build strong relationships across internal departments, external advisors, CRA, and industry peer tax specialists
  • Support divisional GMs and Controllers with ad hoc financial analytics on an occasional basis

As the ideal candidate, you will bring:
  • A CPA designation and completion of the CPA In-Depth Tax Program
  • 5–10+ years of progressive corporate tax experience, including significant real estate industry exposure
  • Proven experience preparing and reviewing T2 corporate tax returns and managing CRA audits and correspondence
  • Experience with tax planning across multi-entity structures, including tax loss planning, debt loops, and corporate reorganizations
  • Familiarity with partnerships, joint ventures, intercompany transactions, and consolidation
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian corporate income tax, compliance requirements, and relevant legislation
  • Experience working with external auditors and advisors on tax-related matters
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex tax issues for non-tax stakeholders
  • High degree of professionalism, judgment, and discretion
  • Experience in a lead in-house tax role or as a senior tax advisor supporting a complex corporate group is strongly preferred
