The Financial Controller is responsible for managing and overseeing the financial operations of Stella’s Circle. Reporting to the Director of Operations, this role ensures the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial information and supports effective financial management across the organization.
The Financial Controller provides operational and technical expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, and compliance, while maintaining strong internal controls and financial systems. This role supports informed decision-making by providing reliable financial insights and analysis to leadership and program teams.

The Financial Controller is responsible for managing and overseeing the financial operations of Stella’s Circle. Reporting to the Director of Operations, this role ensures the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of financial information and supports effective financial management across the organization.
The Financial Controller provides operational and technical expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, and compliance, while maintaining strong internal controls and financial systems. This role supports informed decision-making by providing reliable financial insights and analysis to leadership and program teams.
What You Will Do:
- Team Financial Operations & Oversight
- Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial reporting.
- Supervise and support the finance team, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and timeliness of work.
- Lead monthly and annual financial close processes.
- Maintain and strengthen financial processes, systems, and internal controls.
- Support continuous improvement and standardization across financial operations.
- Financial Reporting, Budgeting & Analysis
- Prepare accurate and timely financial reports in accordance with funding and reporting requirements.
- Support the preparation of quarterly financial statements and reporting packages for leadership, the Finance & Audit Committee, and the Board.
- Coordinate and support the annual budgeting process across programs and departments.
- Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and provide insights to support decision-making.
- Maintain the Chart of Accounts to support effective reporting and analysis.
- Coordinate the annual audit process and act as the primary contact for external auditors.
- Cash Management & Financial Controls
- Monitor cash flow and liquidity to support operational needs.
- Track reserves and investments in alignment with organizational policies.
- Ensure appropriate controls are in place for cash handling, banking, and financial authority.
- Maintain relationships with banking partners and financial institutions.
- Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, legal, and funding requirements, including Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and charitable reporting.
- Maintain accurate financial records in accordance with organizational policies and retention standards.
- Identify financial risks and support the implementation of mitigation strategies.
- Ensure adherence to applicable accounting standards, including Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO).
- Financial Advisory & Business Support
- Provide financial guidance and support to program and departmental leads.
- Contribute to funding proposals and grant applications through budget development and financial input.
- Present financial information in a clear and accessible manner for non-financial audiences.
- Work closely with the Director of Operations to support organizational financial planning and priorities.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
- Professional accounting designation (CPA) required or near completion.
- Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, including supervisory experience.
- Experience in not-for-profit or government-funded environments is an asset.
- Demonstrated expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, audit coordination, and internal controls.
- Experience with financial systems (e.g., Sage 300 or similar ERP).
- Knowledge of Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations (ASNPO).
- Strong proficiency in financial systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Familiarity with funder reporting requirements and payroll processes.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly.
- Sound judgment and problem-solving abilities.
- High level of integrity and confidentiality.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively across teams.
