Wills and Estates Law Clerk

Our client, a dynamic downtown Ottawa law firm is currently seeking a Wills and Estates Law Clerk to join their team. 


YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary (70%):

• Preparing and drafting documentation relating to wills and estate administration including wills, powers of attorney, living will directives, affidavits, court and government forms, releases and indemnities;
• Reviewing documents related to estates and estate administration including financial documents; 
• Managing ongoing estate administration matters including all manners of searches, filings and registrations; 
• Corresponding professionally with clients and other external stakeholders such as lawyers, accountants or government employees; and
• Attending to general estates work when required. 

Ancillary (30%): 

• Handling administrative duties such as lawyer email and calendars, coordinating meetings, conflict searches, processing incoming and outgoing correspondence, printing, scanning and copying as required;
• Processing dockets, billing and accounts receivable;
• Organizing client files or parts of files using the document management system; and
• Attending to other duties as required.

YOUR REQUIREMENTS:

• Completion of a law clerk program or diploma; AND/OR
• One to three years’ work experience, including internship or coop placement, as a Law Clerk or Paralegal in the specialized area of wills and estates law;
• Exposure to Estate Litigation is an asset;
• Very strong technical skills using: Various applicable industry tools, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Document Management software, PC Law and/or GhostPractice, Estateably, docketing, billings;
• Ability to work closely, and in collaboration with lawyers, other clerks, and staff; 
• Able to work and reason independently on client files; 
• Strong interpersonal skills to interact directly, sensitively, and diplomatically with counsel and other legal professionals outside of the firm, as well as with our clients; and
• Superior organization and attention to detail to effectively manage accurate files.

Salary range: $48,000 to $60,000 commensurate with experience.
