Role Description:
As Senior Electrical Engineer, you will play a key role in the planning, design, and optimization of Saint John Energy’s electrical distribution system. Reporting to the Director of Engineering and System Strategy, you will lead initiatives that enhance system reliability, integrate renewable and distributed energy resources (DERs), and support the organization’s sustainability and modernization goals. This position combines technical leadership, project execution, and collaboration across multiple teams to deliver innovative energy solutions.

Key Responsibilities:
Engineering Design & System Analysis
- Lead the design and implementation of distribution projects, including lines, substations, and system upgrades.
- Conduct electrical system studies (load flow, short circuit, reliability, protection).
- Develop technical specifications, design packages, and contract documentation.
- Drive risk-based asset management strategies and lifecycle planning.
- Optimize asset-health models and enterprise asset management systems.
- Contribute to capital and operational planning processes.
- Engineer solutions for renewable energy and DER integration.
- Support initiatives that enhance grid automation, visibility, and resilience.
- Research and deploy emerging technologies, including energy storage and advanced analytics.
- Manage engineering and construction projects from concept to completion.
- Coordinate internal teams, contractors, and external stakeholders.
- Provide technical input for business cases and strategic decisions.
- Develop and maintain engineering best practices.
- Deliver technical training to engineering and operational staff.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers.
- Ensure adherence to regulatory standards and NERC reliability compliance.
- Promote safety-first culture and environmental stewardship.
Education & Licensing
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or related discipline).
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation or eligibility for registration with APEGNB.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- 10+ years of experience in electrical distribution system planning, design, and analysis.
- Experience with renewable energy, DERMS, energy storage, or distribution automation.
- Familiarity with tools such as CYME, PLS-CADD, SPIDAcalc.
- Knowledge of grid automation, protection systems, and digital grid technologies.
- Experience with asset management methodologies and reliability engineering.
- Understanding of industry regulations, utility standards, and NERC requirements.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results.
- Passion for sustainability and innovation.
- Experience in design of communication and SCADA projects.
- Project management training or experience in business case development.
