Meridia Recruitment Solutions is pleased to assist Wataynikaneyap Power PM Inc. in the search for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join their team in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Wataynikaneyap Power is a licensed transmission entity majority-owned by 24 First Nation communities, in partnership with Fortis Inc. and other private investors. As the largest Indigenous-led infrastructure project in Canada, Wataynikaneyap Power is committed to connecting 17 remote First Nation communities in Northern Ontario to the provincial power grid. This impactful project will bring clean, reliable, and accessible electricity to thousands of people.
Role Description:
As the Senior Electrical Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the electrical transmission system. Reporting to the Director of Operations, you will lead the development of operational processes, oversee system control and outage planning, and manage projects that enhance monitoring, dispatch, and reporting functions. This role demands a strong commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence.
Wataynikaneyap Power welcomes candidates with deep technical expertise in electrical transmission systems, especially those with experience in SCADA, protection and control systems, and substation operations. Respect for Indigenous Peoples and their culture, language and traditions is essential.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Excellence
- Develop and refine procedures for system operation, control, outage response, and restoration.
- Ensure compliance with IESO Market Rules, Ontario Reliability Compliance Program, and industry best practices.
- Maintain cybersecurity and physical asset security protocols for operational technology systems.
- Troubleshoot protection, control, and communication systems; provide technical guidance to staff and contractors.
- Oversee integration and commissioning of new assets and control room functionality.
- Lead long-term control room strategy and system performance reporting.
- Support planning studies, asset management, and capital project development.
- Provide mentorship and direction in substation equipment, SCADA, and communications systems.
- Coordinate with internal teams, service providers, and external partners including IESO and neighbouring transmitters.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng).
- 5+ years of experience related to substation equipment, protection and control, communications, and/or control room operations, preferably in a regulated electrical utility environment.
- Familiarity with bulk electrical system components and transmission system planning concepts.
- Knowledge of SCADA systems, NERC-CIP standards, IESO Market Rules, and transmission system planning.
- Technical expertise in planning, design, construction and/or maintenance of power transmission lines, substations, and/or protection systems considered an asset.
- Experience working with First Nations considered an asset.
- Strong judgment, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Valid Ontario “G” driver’s license and clean abstract; travel required.
