Role Description
The Manager, Health & Safety at Shannex is responsible for ensuring ongoing compliance with health and safety legislation and regulations across all three provinces of operation. This includes supporting and assessing program procedures, creating resources, establishing metrics and measuring implementation to meet legal requirements and mitigate risks. The role also involves developing and updating policies, procedures, training materials, and guidance documents to promote due diligence and industry best practices. Additionally, the successful candidate will provide guidance on health and safety topics, fostering a safety culture, and conducting ongoing education and training to maintain a safe work environment.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Provide leadership and direct supervision to the Health & Safety team, establishing and utilizing metrics to measure performance, ensuring disciplinary procedures and documentation are completed, and holding regular team meetings and 1:1 discussions;
  • Develop, assess, monitor, and adjust Health & Safety programs to address trends in incidents, hazards, injuries, etc.;
  • Remain up-to-date on relevant regulatory changes, identifying any relevant implications for the organization and proposing appropriate solutions, ensuring organizational due diligence;
  • Monitor emerging compliance requirements, developing strategies to respond to compliance risks, and conducting regular compliance audits and follow-up inspections;
  • Analyze injury data to develop prevention strategies and deliver relevant training and education on a wide range of topics related to organizational safety;
  • Provide coaching and support to various department leaders and Managers on Health & Safety matters, integrating standards into operational planning and ensuring alignment of safety goals;
  • Support the opening of new buildings from a Health & Safety perspective, leading orientation training and ensuring the appropriate documents and resources are readily available on-site.
Your Qualifications

As the ideal candidate, you are seasoned safety professional with demonstrated experience leading a team and troubleshooting complex safety issues. You bring a comprehensive understanding of applicable legislation, coupled with strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, and are able to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and managers across a large and dynamic organization.

Qualifications include:
  • A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and certificate or diploma in Safety management or a related discipline that includes courses in emergency planning, response, and hazard and risk assessment;
  • A minimum of 5 - 7 years of professional experience in an Occupational Health & Safety role;
  • Experience leading and managing a team of safety professionals would be considered a strong asset;
  • An applicable Health & Safety designation from a recognized institution is required (i.e., CRSP);
  • Experience working in a unionized or healthcare environment would be considered a strong asset;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a strong ability to build relationships and work with various stakeholders across the organization;
  • Comprehensive understanding of applicable federal, provincial, and municipal legislation and regulations pertaining to Occupational Health & Safety, claims management, and human rights;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) coupled with data analysis capabilities.
