Role Overview
Reporting to the VP Operations, the Director of Engineering is responsible for the leadership of the Engineering Department.  The person in this role is market-focused and will unleash their best-in-class engineering team to deliver excellent results in a fast-paced environment.  The individual who fills this role will be an integral part of MetOcean team, leading technical resources, driving product development and managing continuous improvement.

The Director of Engineering will be confident managing teams while, at the same time, setting goals, budgets and timelines for various projects. They will lead and manage integrations with external partners and participate in all product development plans from ideation to execution.  Focused on quality, the Director of Engineering will be responsible for taking our innovative technology and ensuring current and new products meet design requirements and deliver a consistent experience for users.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead
  • As a top priority, lead and support a team of engineers and technical resources.
  • Establish and oversee the technical vision for the team.
  • Hire, train, and manage a team of engineers, providing guidance and mentorship to help them achieve their full potential.
  • Identify and implement methods that encourage and enable employees to excel in their roles in a team environment.
  • Ensure business strategy, objectives, priorities, and schedules are well communicated within the department.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Sales, Marketing, Product Management and Operations to ensure that product development aligns with business objectives.

Deliver
  • Collaborate closely with the Director of Product Management, ensuring customer problems are understood and that customer needs are translated into clear system and technical requirements.
  • Organize, moderate and delegate engineering deliverables, design decisions and responsibilities daily.
  • Ensure the department accomplishes projects and work on time.
  • Lead development projects and activities within the department, including the design of embedded software, firmware, hardware and mechanical systems.
  • As needed, participate in the direct review and approval of designs and changes in design within own discipline of expertise.
  • Quantify the level of effort and ensure sufficient resources are in place in order to execute to schedule, using contingent labour as required.
  • Collaborate with the Operations and Product Management to ensure the successful release of products to market.

Control
  • Develop and implement company policies, standards and procedures for engineering and design.
  • Ensure the maintenance of quality within department by enforcing quality and engineering standards; analyzing and resolving quality and customer service problems; identifying trends; recommending system improvements.
  • Lead all compliance & regulatory approvals. 
  • Establish robust Product Verification and Validation processes, ensuring products perform reliably and meet customer expectations.
  • Review product and design specifications for new projects while confirming they are accurate and well documented.
  • Introduce industry best practices, processes and tools to support quick and reliable product.

The ideal candidate will possess:
  • BSc or MSc in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years of experience leading technical teams.
  • Knowledge of software, firmware, hardware, and mechanical design principles.
  • Experience with product development, engineering change, and new product introduction processes.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience working with external suppliers and consultants.
  • Demonstrated success in bringing products to market.

Assets
  • Manager or Director of Engineering experience.
  • Familiarity with JIRA and Product Lifecycle Management tools.
  • Knowledge of current software development processes and architectures.
  • Experience designing satellite, cellular, or marine products.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or MBA.
