Our client, Petroservice, is a service, distribution, installation, and construction company in the petroleum and fluid handling industry. Founded in 1985, they have continued to grow in the Atlantic region, and have recently started expanding into new Canadian markets through a number of acquisitions. We are happy to partner with Petroservice in search of a Health & Safety Coordinator to join their team in Saint John, New Brunswick, with travel to their various locations throughout Canada.

Role Description

As the Health & Safety Coordinator, you will be responsible for all aspects of the health & safety program, ensuring that the health & safety mandates and vision are always adhered to, and concerns are addressed in a timely manner. You will have significant influence in the creation and roll out of new safety processes and procedures across the organization as they strive to meet new standards and certifications and as they bring all acquisitions under one safety program. Investigations will largely be completed remotely, while site visits will occur occasionally for follow ups and training delivery. You will also conduct technical writing to translate safety codes and standards into documentation usable by individuals throughout the organization.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the corporate health & safety vision, mission, and strategy by effective leadership through regional operations and corporate plans
  • Providing timely guidance, training and technical support on Occupational Health and Safety issues
  • Working with the health & safety team and business lines to develop and implement policies, procedures, and training programs both across the organization and specific to each business line
  • Acting as a technical reference in the development, implementation, and evaluation of new and updated health & safety programs
  • Monitoring industry trending and best practices to continuously improve processes
  • Developing and maintaining reporting systems to measure and report on health and safety performance objectives
  • Managing and facilitating health & safety audits as required
  • Assessing effectiveness of existing processes and participate in the development of new process and approaches to ensure compliance with legislation and company Health & Safety policies
  • Conducting and/or assisting with incident investigations, coordinating the communication process, and recommending corrective actions
  • Engaging in health & safety communication and promotion activities through the use of newsletters, bulletins, reports, memorandums, and events
  • Working with operations to ensure ongoing inspections of offices, labs, warehouse facilities, and projects are completed as required

Your Qualifications

As an experienced Health & Safety professional, you ideally have experience in a construction, industrial or manufacturing setting. Your training, education, and/or certification in health & safety topics has made you a valuable resource to turn to, and you have shown an ability to effectively impact safety culture. You are a strong communicator, allowing you to generate buy-in from a variety of stakeholders to new ideas, and you can successfully enforce safety measures when met with pushback.

Your qualifications include:

  • Completion of a certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, Canadian Registered Safety Professional or a closely related accreditation is strongly preferred
  • Post-secondary education from an accredited university or college with a degree or diploma in Environment, Quality or Safety is an asset
  • 5 years of progressive Health & Safety experience in a petroleum and/or construction environment would be beneficial
  • Working knowledge of Health & Safety regulations for across Canada
  • Strong leadership skills with the capability to assess priorities and to work independently, as well as in a team environment
  • Well-developed communication skills, both written and verbal, along with excellent interpersonal, organizational abilities
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be flexible to travel
