Meridia Recruitment Solutions has partnered with our client, J.D. Irving, Limited to recruit a Director of Human Resources to join the Construction and Equipment based in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The Construction and Equipment Division, a part of the J.D. Irving, Limited group of companies, is a key player in the Atlantic Canadian market. With six operating companies in the division, the group provides heavy lift and crane services, civil construction services, modular home and commercial buildings, wallboard manufacturing, steel and fabrication services, technical field services (mechanical, NDT, survey, etc.), and pump sales, parts, and repair services to its customers.

Role Description:
Reporting to the Vice President of the Construction and Equipment division, the Director of Human Resources will provide strategic direction, leadership and oversight on all human resource functions for the group of businesses within the division including workforce planning, labour relations, recruitment and retention, training and development, compensation and benefits, as well as employee engagement. You’ll work with a team of dedicated and passionate HR professionals to execute various initiatives, providing support and mentorship wherever possible. More importantly, you’ll play a critical role in identifying and implementing corporate programs for the broader group of companies and divisions.

As the Director of Human Resources, you will have the ability to work with business leaders from a diverse portfolio of companies as well as the opportunity to lead the strategic direction of HR functions within the division. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as a senior member of the divisional leadership team, and collaborating with the Vice President and company General Managers to establish and executive JDI’s people strategy;
  • Supporting labour relations and to ensure all requirements are met, key metrics and balanced scorecard results are achieved, and risks are minimized;
  • Leading and executing recruitment and talent acquisition strategies to ensure companies are staffed adequately;
  • Facilitating compensation review, recommending pay adjustments and/or changes to compensation as necessary;
  • Maintaining close relationships, coordination, and collaboration with executive leaders, directors and people leaders and union officials across the Construction and Equipment division to meet all program requirements and ensure organization-wide strategies are successfully implemented;
  • Delivering effective talent management by supporting staff, particularly management, as they seek learning and development opportunities.

Your Qualifications:
As the ideal candidate, you are an ambitious and strategic human resources leader who has proven to deliver results, and effectively lead a team of HR professionals. You have experience developing and executing recruitment strategies and are comfortable working in a unionize environment. You are confident presenting new ideas to members of the executive leadership team letting data drive your decisions. Most importantly, you are passionate about growth and development, not just yours but the growth of those around you and within the business, looking for new opportunities to develop the next generation of leaders.

Qualifications include:

  • Post-secondary education with an emphasis in Human Resources and/or Industrial Relations, MBA considered an asset;
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in a Human Resources role, with demonstrated expertise in a broad range of HR functions;
  • CPHR designation;
  • Previous experience working in a unionized environment;
  • Previous experience leading and developing a collaborative, successful team;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and achieve required objectives;
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving, planning and analytical skills;
  • Demonstrated use of sound judgement and reliable decision making;
  • Strong organizational skills and a high degree of self-motivation and business acumen.
