Partnered with Meridia, Michelin is seeking an experienced Automated Material Handling Systems Engineer to join its Bridgewater, Nova Scotia manufacturing team.

Role Description

As the Automated Material Handling Systems Engineer, you will lead a range of projects from modifying existing equipment to large-scale capital projects in an effort to increase efficiency, productivity, and quality. Your duties in the field of automated material handling will consist of building feasibility studies, building functional specifications, identifying alternatives and their strengths/weaknesses, leading projects into production, building scope of work documents, and identifying and communicating with vendors.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Lead flow studies (static/dynamic) and simulations
  • Create initial designs, assist to define functional specifications for machines and systems, develop estimates and budgets, procure parts and systems, and monitor electrical equipment fabrication in projects that range from modifications to existing equipment to large-scale expansion
  • Lead evolution of design and estimation tools for material handling systems locally and within the Michelin network
  • Lead efforts to optimize deployment cost of material handling and storage processes
  • Provide hands-on technical expertise to operators and maintenance personnel for maintenance, modification, and problem-solving analysis
  • Provide technical expertise for all electrical components including various types of sensors, controls (PLC), motors, drives, HMI operator interfaces, and power distribution
  • Participate in all aspects of project management from economic justification to commissioning and technical documentation acceptance
  • Act as liaison between facility engineering, quality, methods, purchasing teams, and equipment suppliers
  • Provide leadership in continuous improvement, efficiency, and root cause analysis
  • Build and maintain relationships within Michelin’s network of professionals to share material handling evolutions, update standards, and ensure competencies meet with company directions

Your Qualifications

As an experienced engineer or technologist in an industrial environment, you have the ability to conceptualize ideas and process designs in a manufacturing setting. You are experienced in dynamic simulations and can apply them to numerous types of automated material flow systems. You have a demonstrated capability of conceptualizing and leading projects that transform material handling procedures previously containing manual processes. Additionally, you are a fantastic team player that can coordinate projects that involve multiple departments and other stakeholders.

Your qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or diploma in engineering technology; preferably specializing in automation and controls
  • 7+ years of experience working in a material handling, conveyors, and storage leadership role, specifically in an industrial environment
  • 5+ years of project management experience
  • Demonstrated analytical ability to test and debug PLC software
  • Strong skills in the use and leadership of automation control systems, such as Rockwell/Allen-Bradley/Siemens
  • Experience with GRAFCET, and HMI programming standards
  • Robotic configuration experience, specifically with Fanuc ABB is considered a strong asset
  • Experience with AGV integration into material handling systems is considered an asset
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence and resolve issues
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with internal plant customers and external networks
  • Ability to build and motivate cross-functional teams and support technical mentorship in the field of automation
