Land Stewardship Manager

Halifax, Nova Scotia
Reference #SM-14267

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust was created to protect and conserve our province’s incredible natural legacy. They work directly to save outstanding natural areas, through land conservation. They use a strategic, science-driven approach to identify and protect the most threatened, unique and significant natural areas, for nature and future generations to enjoy. The Nature Trust has protected over 15,000 acres of land across Nova Scotia. These conservation lands will be protected — forever.

On behalf of our client, we are currently recruiting for an experienced Land Stewardship Manager to join their team of dedicated professionals in an opportunity to do meaningful work with a small but ambitious organization achieving inspiring and significant results.

Reporting to the Director of Conservation, the Land Stewardship Manager is part of an enthusiastic and professional conservation team with members focused on land securement, conservation science/ecology and planning, conservation education/outreach and volunteer coordination. Other staff and volunteers support this work through communications, marketing, fundraising, and administration. Entrusted with the care and management of 125 (and counting!) conservation sites across Nova Scotia – over 15,000 acres of wild and beautiful nature – the Land Stewardship Manager is responsible for ensuring that the rare, unique and important natural features of these lands thrive, from endangered wildlife to old growth forests, and inspiring and engaging Nova Scotians in helping to steward these very special places. The successful candidate will be a visionary and strategic leader, helping the Nova Scotia Nature Trust create an innovative, robust and expanded land stewardship program and organizational capacity to ensure the lands entrusted to their care are truly protected, forever.

As the ideal candidate, you are an ambitious, results-driven leader, a strategic thinker with inspiring vision, drive and a proven track record of accomplishment. You are intelligent and highly motivated, enabling you to excel at learning and adapting the ‘best practices’ of land stewardship from across the land trust world to meet their unique challenges in Nova Scotia and to establish the Nature Trust as Nova Scotia’s leader in land stewardship. As an exceptional communicator, you instill trust and confidence, creating strong relationships with diverse stakeholders. You have a friendly, professional demeanor, diplomacy and an aptitude for dealing with difficult situations and problem solving. The ideal candidate is multi-talented and adaptable – equally comfortable contributing to the development of strategic conservation plans or envisioning a new app for conservation volunteers, managing a complex program or talking conservation with kids. Ideally, you have a professional background and experience in land conservation, stewardship, natural resources or protected areas planning and management – most importantly however you have a love for the natural world, spending time in the wild, and are deeply passionate about caring for the wild and engaging Nova Scotians in land stewardship. A related university or college degree is required.
